Bernauer Straße – The Berlin Wall Memorial

The Bernauer Straße is a street in Berlin’s Mitte district, it was named after the City of Bernau which is located about 10 km northeast of Berlin. During the old GDR times, the Wall was erected alongside this street and it became famous for numerous escapes from windows of nearby apartments and houses in the eastern part of the city.

Now, a part of it was turned into a memorial park, explaining the history of a divided Berlin, with a newly constructed Visitor and Information Center, a viewing platform and an exhibition about the time when the Berlin Wall was built in August 1961.

Berlin Street Art – Hands

German Street Artist Andreas von Chrzanowski a.k.a case painted this piece of art in less than one week, on a wall at Köpenicker Straße X Brückenstraße in Berlin.

Case, who is known for photo-realistic portraits, is part of the graffiti crew Ma’Claim, which was founded in 2000 and is considered as pioneers in photo-realistic representation within the graffiti scene.

Olympus OM-D Photography Playground 2014

Because last year’s exhibition was a huge success and over 27.000 people visited the Opernwerkstätten in Berlin in 2013, Olympus is hosting another OM-D Photography Playground from April 10 until Mai 25, 2014 (same location).

Japanese Embassy Cherry Blossoms

It’s this time of the year again, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom throughout the city and instead of taking part in the annual Cherry Blossom Celebration at Berlin’s Gardens of the World, I thought I should pay the Japanese Embassy a visit.

Built between 1938 and 1942 and designed by Ludwig Moshammer, damaged during WWII and rebuilt in 1987, the Japanese Embassy is one of 166 foreign representations in Berlin.

And as the national flower of Japan, it’s pretty obvious that even “little Japan” has its very own Cherry Blossom Trees.

UdSSR Space Capsule visits Berlin

A former Soviet space capsule was exhibited at the Jüdische Mädchenschule in Berlin from April 4-7. The capsule, named Vozvrashchayemyi Apparat, is scheduled to be sold at auction in Brussels on May 7.

The 1850kg heavy device, which could carry three astronauts, went to the moon and back two times in the late 1970s. Two Sokol-KV2 Space Suits were also displayed together with the interior electronics.

Bikini Berlin – Shop Different

A new shopping mall opened its doors to the public today in Berlin, located in the western area of downtown Berlin (near Kurfürstendamm), next to the Berlin Zoo, the newly reopened Zoo Palast and facing the new Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

The Bikini Berlin is Berlin’s first Concept Mall, on about 17,000m², you can find a collection of carefully selected and perfectly matched boutiques, concept and flagship stores as well as restaurants and service providers.

You also have a great view on Berlin’s Zoo and its animal kingdom through a panoramic window while drinking a coffee at the bar or enjoying the sun on the terrace.

Divergent German Premiere Berlin

The German Premiere of Divergent (Ger. Die Bestimmung) took place today, April 1st, in Berlin, with director Neil Burger and the main cast Shailene Woodley and Theo James.

Divergent is the film adaption of the same-named novel written by Veronica Roth and is also the first installment in the Divergent film series, followed by Insurgent and Allegiant.

Earth Hour 2014 Berlin

It’s Earth Hour around the World and millions of people in over 7000 cities in 150 countries across all 7 continents are switching their lights off for an hour to raise awareness for the planet.

In Berlin, the Brandenburger Tor went completely dark for an hour, together with other famous Landmarks throughout the city and the WWF-Youth performed a special Black-light-Show, forming the words “Earth Hour 2014” and other names and places chosen by the audience.
