After we’ve seen all those beautiful cars, how about some airplanes? Big ones, Small ones, not as many as cars but there were quite a bit and people had the chance to buy a sightseeing flight in a plane of their choice.

And of course, what are Classic Days without the opportunity to show what’s yours by driving your car with maximum speed on a closed airfield.

Schönhagen, an airport about 30km from the border of Berlin, place of event of this years Classic Days 2010 with over 100 classic autos from the past 60 years.

I have to admit, I’m not a car-lover and I have no idea which car is the best car of all time but, it was quite interesting so see all these different models on one place, especially the ones you only get to see in magazines these days.

For the 8th time, Sandsation is back in Berlin with over 20 sand artists (called carvers) from all over the world (You may remember last year’s event). This year I had the chance to see the artists live in action.

But, what kind of sand do they use?

Well, the sand has been compressed into a material much like a soft sand stone, it also has a little “silt” content, so it wouldn’t work with normal beach sand.

You can visit Sandsation 2010 from June 9th till August 29th at the riverside of the Spree in Friedrichshain at Berlin’s O2 World.

A Renaissance Festival is fun for the whole family and every year around Easter, the knights are back in town. With fire-eaters, blacksmiths, knights, jugglers and jesters everything you need to feel like you are back in Medieval Times.

All over the place you can smell the scent of freshly baked bread, cold beer and roasted sausages. A minnesinger is playing his lute and somewhere you can here the sounds of jousting knights.

Last weekend, I was in Leipzig to visit the Leipzig Book Fair 2010.

The Leipzig Book Fair is the most important spring meeting place for the publishing and media sector and has evolved into an attractive hallmark both in Germany and across Europe.

But after I arrived at the exhibition grounds, it was obvious that the fair isn’t only about Books anymore. Cosplayers, as far as the eye could see.

Since Animes and Mangas are becoming more and more famous in Germany, Cosplay is pretty popular among the fans and instead of taking pictures from books and their authors, I focused on capturing all the amazing costumes I saw during my time at the fair.

After 3 long weeks I finally got my camera back, I had to send it to the Canon support to fix a broken card slot and a broken digital board.

With my brand new (repaired) camera, I visited this years ITB, the International Tourism Fair 2010 in Berlin.

The ITB is the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show with more than 180,000 visitors, among these 108,000 trade visitors, and over 10,000 exhibitors from 180 countries. The whole variety of travelling is present at ITB Berlin: Destinations, tour operators, booking systems, carriers, hotels and all other suppliers who want to embellish their customers most beautiful weeks of the year.

It was an interesting day, besides lots of catalogs and brochures with information about the different countries, people had the chance to see traditional dances, craftsman and goods from around the world.

After the Narrenbaum was erected, the city was ready for the big Night Parade. Led by a couple of marching bands, thousands of different Narren (as I said yesterday, Narren are something like a jester or Joker) ran through the city. Jumping, laughing, whip lashing and tangerine throwing, it was a fascinating moment.

Every city has their own traditional costumes, first you will see the city of Rottweil with their Federhannes, Schantle and Gschell. If you can sing a well known carnival quote, you will be rewarded with a handful of candy.

The second city (hope you have umlauts enabled) is Überlingen with their Hänsele. A whip slashing and cap stealing Narr, their long noses are spayed with perfume and if you don’t watch out, they will brush you face with it.

The third city is Oberndorf, with their Hansel, Schantele and Narro. A basket full of tangerines and a rod full of pretzels and if you are a lucky one, they will throw one of these yummy things towards you.

The last city is Elzach with their Schuttig, a bunch of grimly, Soublodere swinging Narren. A Soublodere is a ballooned bladder of a pig on a stick, sounds yukky and yes it is.

Well, every one of these Schuttig has carried a torch and at the end they have sparked a big fire to celebrate the end of the first day.

1. Narrentag 2010 – Part 01 – The Beginning

Last weekend, I took a plane to Stuttgart , to watch an event which only takes place every 3-4 years, the Narrentag (which probably means something like “Day of the Jester”), organized by one of four famous carnival cities; Rottweil, Oberndorf, Elzach and Überlingen, all of them part of the Viererbund, a union between these four cities since 1958.

This year the parade took place in Oberndorf (Black Forest), about 1 hour away from Stuttgart.

As an opening ceremony, a decorated tree, the Narrenbaum, was erected, as a symbol that the Narrentag has officially begun.

Like every year, the Coca Cola Christmas Trucks were on a tour through every major city in Germany and the final parade was held in Berlin yesterday. Ten trucks with four stages and a snack bar to buy Bratwurst and Glühwein against the cold.

With -16°C (3.2°F) and heavy snowfall, it was the coldest day of the year. But that was not a real problem and thousands of people were following the parade on its way from the Kurfürstendamm, via the Potsdamer Platz and the Brandenburger Tor to its final goal, the Rote Rathaus Berlin.

It’s winter! Well, only meteorological but, the next thing I will show you is typical for this season, no snow but ice. For the first time ever, Chinese artists displaying their ancient ice art in Germany. Six-metre-high sculptures on 1200 square metres, with a constant exhibition temperature of minus.. well let’s say it was damn cold.

The Sculptures, created by a large number of international prize winners, are to be continually expanded upon and finalized during the exhibition. The exhibition itself is held between the November 27th 2009 and February 22nd 2010 near the O2 World Berlin.
