„Beotkkot Chukje“, „Shang Mei“ and „Hanami“, again this year, the Cherry Blossom Festival took place in Berlin’s Gardens of the World with many shows, performers, cosplayers and of course sakura trees.

The cherry blossom (sakura) is the national flower of Japan. To honor its beauty, and short life span, the Japanese celebrate its arrival with a yearly festival. Friends will gather under the trees to enjoy rice wine (sake), sing songs, and celebrate the coming of spring.

In Berlin, the Japanese, the Chinese and the Koreans celebrated this day together on Sunday, 17. April.

Berlinale 2011 is over. During the last week 18 young photographers received the opportunity to experience working as professional photojournalists to show us this years Berlinale through their eyes, or should I say, through their cameras?

All the works were gathered at the C/O Berlin gallery and Dieter Kosslick himself opened the exhibition “Close Up!”.

The City of Berlin has placed a 14 meters high and 53 meters wide Hollywood Sign in the middle of the Tiergarten between the Brandenburg Gate and the Potsdamer Platz.

The Holly- wait.. there is only one L? Oh boy, something went terribly wrong…

Just kidding, the Holywood Sign is a creation by the artist and filmmaker Ralf Schmerberg and part of a Climate Protection campaign, to plant 10.000 new trees all across the City.

So from now on, it’s “Welcome to HolyWood”.

Japan Festival Berlin 2011

by Carsten on January 17, 2011 in Festivals

The Japan Festival 2011 took place during the last 2 days at Berlin’s Urania with many stands, artists and two stages with non-stop-live programs such as Taiko Drums, Aikido, Karate, Kendo, Cosplay, Ju Tai Jutsu, and many more.

Even an authentic Japanese cuisine freshly made by Japanese chief Takao Udagawa such as Sushi, Udon and Misu.

For me, it was a really funny and interesting festival, maybe because it wasn’t all about cosplay and mangas but more about the culture, the food and the lifestyle of the japanese people.

From the Potsdamer Platz through the Friedrichstraße to the Brandenburg Gate, the Coca Cola Christmas Trucks were on a tour through Berlin once again. Like last year, it was the coldest day of the year (-13°C), only the heavy snowfall was missing.

I’m back in Berlin, back from this years Connichi in Kassel, a city about 360km away from Berlin and all I can say is, it was amazing.

The Connichi is an annual, 3-day Anime convention in Germany and one of the largest of its kind in the German-speaking world with over 15,000 visitors in 2010. Apart from Japanese artists that go on stage, Connichi hosts a variety of amateur performers showing plays and musicals, singing and/or doing standup comedy with anime-related themes.

Like the Leipzig Book Fair, the Connichi is also a place for many thousands of cosplayers and because that’s the only interesting reason for me to visit such a convention, I will show you some of the best cosplays I saw during my time in Kassel.

Horse Racing is interesting, but what could we add to make it a bit more interesting? That’s right, a chariot, welcome to Roman Horse Racing. Last Sunday, on a race track in Berlin’s Mariendorf district, 17 competitors showed us an exciting spectacle, fighting against each other to win the 10.000€ trophy.

Chariot racing was the most popular sport in Rome, appealing to all social classes from slaves to the emperor himself.

After we’ve seen all those beautiful cars, how about some airplanes? Big ones, Small ones, not as many as cars but there were quite a bit and people had the chance to buy a sightseeing flight in a plane of their choice.

And of course, what are Classic Days without the opportunity to show what’s yours by driving your car with maximum speed on a closed airfield.
