Jewish Memorial Berlin

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe or Holocast Memorial is a construction which was build on 1st April in 2003, well let’s say they began to build it, because the last stelae was erected on 15th December in 2004.

The Memorial, which contains 2,711 stelaes, covers a vast area of 19.000 m² and can be found near the Brandenburger Tor in the middle of Berlin.

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in the centre of Berlin is Germany’s central Holocaust memorial site, a place for remembrance and commemoration of six million victims. The Memorial consists of the Field of Stelae designed by architect Peter Eisenman and the underground Information Centre and is maintained by a Federal Foundation.

Computer Games Museum Berlin

A new Museum just opened its doors in Berlin’s Karl-Marx-Allee, and it’s not one of those boring historical ones, the Computerspielemuseum or Computer Games Museum Berlin. Well, it’s about the history of gaming and it might be boring if you are not interested in Video Games… but if you are, it is really interesting and informative.

Our museum, which was opened in Berlin in 1997, was the world’s first permanent exhibition devoted to digital interactive entertainment culture. Since then, we have documented the development of the medium at over 30 national and international events.

You are invited on an entertaining expedition to meet the game players of the 21st century. Numerous rare original exhibits, playable classic games and assorted media productions help you exploring the world of “Homo Ludens Digitalis”.

Anyway, if you have a liking in video games and want to know more about the creation of the Comodore64 and the invention of Apple’s first personal computer, you should pay it a visit.

Berlin’s Walk of Fame

From now on, you don’t have to travel all the way to Hollywood to see some stars, because Berlin got his very own version of the Walk of Fame. The Boulevard der Stars (Boulevard of the Stars), located in the middle of the Potsdamer Platz is Berlin’s newest tourist attraction.

The boulevard features German celebrities such as Marlene Dietrich, Romy Schneider or Michael Ballhaus. The first 40 brass stars were embedded in the ground over the last few weeks, while organisers say up to 150 can be laid there.

Sony Center’s Blue Garden

Christmas is near and what is Christmas without decorations. The City of Berlin has some really spectacular decorations this year and I want to start with Sony’s vision of a modern Christmas tree. The Sony Center, located at Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, thought that, it needs something special to pull the attention of nearby visitors.

Berlin’s Funkturm at Night

The Funkturm or Radio Tower is a transmitting tower in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district in Berlin. The 150 m high Tower which was built between 1924 and 1926 is part of the Berlin trade fair ground and a protected monument.

At night, the Tower shines in a wonderful white or sometimes in orange, during the Festival of Lights, he was also covered with red bulbs.

East Side Gallery, walking alongside the Berlin Wall

Tomorrow is a big day, the City of Berlin will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

For that reason, the big East Side Gallery was repaired and repainted. The Berlin Wall East Side Gallery is a 1.3km-long section of the wall near the center of Berlin. Approximately 106 paintings by artists from all over the world cover this memorial for freedom and make it the largest open air gallery in the world.

The Gallery tells with its pictures the story of Berlin and Germany’s history. Many artists were invited to repaint their pictures which were created about twenty years ago. The paintings and the wall were in an extremely deteriorated condition through weather, air pollution, vandalistic collectors, and simply time.

The East Side Gallery is located near the Ostbahnhof.

The Currywurst Museum Berlin

Berlin got a new museum, a museum about a sausage, one of the most famous of Germany’s sausages, the Currywurst.

A journey through time, from the invention by Herta Heuwer in 1949 to the opening of the Deutsches Currywurst Museum in 2009, the museum concept pursues the idea of an interactive experience centre staging multiple facets and featuring many stations where knowledge is communicated in a playful manner.

The museum is located near the Friedrichstraße and the Checkpoint Charlie.

Update: Deutsches Currywurst Museum Berlin is permanently closed since December 21st 2018.

Berlin’s Tropical Greenhouse Reopened!

The Main Tropical Greenhouse in Berlin’s Botanical Garden was reconstructed from 2006 until 2009 and is now again open to the public. After over 100 years, the technical equipment was obsolete and the framework was heavily damaged from rust, so the Greenhouse had to be refurbished. It has a ground surface of 60 x 30 m and a height of 23 m, thus ranging among the largest greenhouses of the world.

Taxonomic groups, like orchids, ferns and bromeliads, or to plants requiring similar cultivation techniques, like succulents, water plants, and insectivorous plants, are grouped together in some houses. Within the main tropical glasshouse, the left half contains plants from tropical America, the right half plants from tropical Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific region.

The Greenhouse contains about 1.300 plants from different continents and pylons are explaining facts about the different kinds of plants to the visitors.
