Due to restoration works, Berlin’s Victor Column (or Siegessäule) is completely scaffolded at the moment and will remain like this until Spring 2011. Only the golden statue of Victoria or Goldelse, like a Berliner would say, is visible.
The Victory Column stands at 61.5m high and provides excellent views of Berlin from the center of Tiergarten. The statue of the victory goddess Viktoria that stands on top of the Victory Column was created by F Drake and weighs an impressive 35 tonnes.
Piano Music meets StreetArt.
Last weekend, I took a walk through Berlin’s Mauerpark, a public park in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district near some remains of the Berlin Wall and I discovered a couple of fancy painted pianos standing around with street artists working on them.
After I gathered some information, I now know that the whole thing was the start of a new event. During the next three weeks, these pianos are placed on different locations in Berlin and everyone is invited to play on them.
I bought a Danbo from amazon.co.jp, the Japanese version of Amazon. I wanted to test how long it would take to send a package from Japan to Berlin and I was pretty surprised after it arrived in less than 2 weeks, considering that I have to wait up to 5 days to get something from amazon.de.
Danbo is the anime figure Miura Hayasaka in a cardboard box suit from the Japanese manga series Yotsuba!. The plastic figure, from the Revoltech line by the company Kaiyodo, has movable joints, light up eyes and stands around 8cm tall.
After we’ve seen all those beautiful cars, how about some airplanes? Big ones, Small ones, not as many as cars but there were quite a bit and people had the chance to buy a sightseeing flight in a plane of their choice.
And of course, what are Classic Days without the opportunity to show what’s yours by driving your car with maximum speed on a closed airfield.
Schönhagen, an airport about 30km from the border of Berlin, place of event of this years Classic Days 2010 with over 100 classic autos from the past 60 years.
I have to admit, I’m not a car-lover and I have no idea which car is the best car of all time but, it was quite interesting so see all these different models on one place, especially the ones you only get to see in magazines these days.
If you are a true fan of something, you want to show it, even if it means to paint your car with stars… and cats.
The Summer has finally arrived in Berlin with temperatures around 32°C and people enjoying the sun on a relaxing boat trip on Berlin’s famous river, the Spree.
Because Berlin is a World City, nothing is odd, not even a huge Brazilian World-Cup-Victory-Celebrating Street Art.
The painting, located in the Schöneberg district, was part of an art project named Joga Bonita (play beautiful) a unique promotion for the World Cup 2006 in Berlin/Germany.
And who knows, maybe they have to add another star after this years event.
For the 8th time, Sandsation is back in Berlin with over 20 sand artists (called carvers) from all over the world (You may remember last year’s event). This year I had the chance to see the artists live in action.
But, what kind of sand do they use?
Well, the sand has been compressed into a material much like a soft sand stone, it also has a little “silt” content, so it wouldn’t work with normal beach sand.
The third Asian festival this year, the Japan Festival Berlin-Steglitz (located in the Steglitz district of Berlin), but this time it was more like a little Japanese market rather than a festival. Tables loaded with all kinds of Japanese goods. Figures, books, Japanese snacks and foods, chopsticks and ramen bowls, all those things you wouldn’t find at your local supermarket.
I tried a japanese lemonade called Ramune, it tasted a bit like Sprite, but less sweet.
It also had a very pungent cough syrup after-taste.
